Word> Preferences> Print to make sure that you do have a check in the boxes forĭrawing Objects & for Print background colors and images.
I'll take a wild guess that this is a document created in Publishing Layout View where everything is contained in bounding boxes. I'm afraid your 2nd paragraph is not at all clear & Word does not have a view known as 'design layout'. Clearly & accurately describe your particular problem in detail. Please be sure to specify your current update level of Office as well a your version of OS X. Mixing in with another user's situation leads to confusion. It's better that you submit your own new question so it can get the attention
